Call for Papers: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Biotechnology.
GEN Biotechnology announced a call for papers for a special issue: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Biotechnology. This collection of research articles, reviews, commentaries and perspectives will be published in 2024. Researchers are invited to submit manuscripts describing DEI issues and considerations in biotechnology. Read more.
NYU professors SueYeon Chung and Jinyoung Park are among 126 researchers recognized by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
Two NYU professors, SueYeon Chung and Jinyoung Park, were named Sloan Research Fellows for their contributions in neuroscience and mathematics. The fellowship, awarded annually by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, aims to acknowledge the creativity, innovation and accomplishments of 126 researchers (about a third of which are women) in the United States and Canada. Read more. Mount Sinai Researchers Receive $5 Million Gift From the Blavatnik Family Foundation to Expand Revolutionary Organ Perfusion Platform.
The Mount Sinai Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute has received a $5 million gift from the Blavatnik Family Foundation, pledged across five years. The impetus for this gift is to support the research of Leona Kim-Schluger, MD, Associate Director of the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute. Read more.

Biden-Harris Administration's ARPA-H commits $100 million to accelerate women’s health research.
In the coming weeks, specific topics developed by ARPA-H Program Managers will be announced as part of a new request for solutions (RS) funding opportunity. The forthcoming RS will solicit ideas for novel groundbreaking research and development to address women’s health. Read more. Renee D. Just 5 women have won a top maths prize in the past 90 years.
“While there has been increasing awareness about the gender gap and important progress in recent years, some aspects remain unchanged,” says Carolina Araujo, chair of the IMU’s Committee for Women in Mathematics. “Statistics show that, while there has been a steady increase of the proportion of women authors of scientific papers in mathematics in the last decades, the proportion of women authors in ‘top journals’ in mathematics remains below 10%.” Read more.
Sylvia Serfaty will receive the 2024 Maryam Mirzakhani Prize in Mathematics.
Congratulations to Sylvia Serfaty of New York University, winner of the National Academy of Sciences’ 2024 Maryam Mirzakhani Prize in Mathematics! She is being honored for her contributions to nonlinear partial differential equations and statistical physics. Watch her receive the award at the 161st NAS Annual Meeting on April 28. Read more.
Disney star turned space CEO: Bridgit Mendler launches satellite data startup backed by major VCs.
Former Disney Channel star and singer Bridgit Mendler is launching a startup called Northwood Space, backed by venture investors including Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and Also Capital. “The vision is a data highway between Earth and space,” Mendler told CNBC. Read more.

The Angelika Amon Young Scientist Award at MIT's Koch Institute is an endowed prize established in 2021 by family and friends to support two graduate students in the life sciences or biomedical research from institutions outside the United States who embody Dr. Amon’s infectious enthusiasm for discovery science. This special award honors a vibrant scientist (1967 - 2020) who was an important RFS board member. Read more.
HHMI Opens National Competition for Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program.
HHMI, a member of our Council of Academic Institutions, opened a national competition to select up to 30 early career faculty in science to join the 2025 cohort of the Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program. The scholars are outstanding basic researchers, including physician-scientists, who have strong potential to become leaders in their fields. Those interested in joining the 2025 Freeman Hrabowski Scholars cohort must apply by May 15, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. ET. Read more.
Keep Moving and Have Fun: Lessons from Women on the Rise.
 Last month, the Danforth Center’s new community resource group, International Women in Science, (IWIS) hosted a Women on the Rise luncheon for the community at the Danforth Center. The event created an inspiring day that aimed to empower women to build a better future through education, leadership development, and community actions. The gender citation gap: Approaches, explanations, and implications.
Contrary to the notion that women are cited less per article due to gender-based bias in research evaluation or citing behaviors, this study suggests that the primary reason for the lower citation rates at the author level is women publishing fewer articles over their careers. Read more.
