A few highlights to focus on here include upcoming events and awards:

  • Nominations are open for the Fiercest Women in Life Sciences 2021. Each year at Fierce, they spotlight women who are leading the way in life sciences. From industry professionals and academics to venture capitalists and regulatory officials, women are making their mark all over biotech, pharma and medtech. Read more.

  • Using just her eyes and memory, Elisabeth Bik has single-handedly identified thousands of studies containing potentially doctored scientific images. Read more.

  • Let's recognize the Juneteenth holiday! For the biotech industry, here are some of the up-and-coming leaders who are Black. The focus here is on people who have made, and continue to make, an impact in science and entrepreneurship. Read more

RFS Briefings - June 22, 2021

Dear Colleagues, 

I am pleased to include another issue of RFS Briefings with some timely and encouraging updates on women in science.

A few highlights to focus on here include upcoming events and awards:

  • The 2022 Vilcek Prize for Excellence in Biotechnology has been awarded to Dr. Katalin Karikó, the senior vice president at BioNTech RNA Pharmaceuticals and adjunct associate professor of neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. Read more.

  • Helen Branswell, Andrew Joseph and the late Sharon Begley of STAT have been named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in the breaking news category. Read more.

  • STAT is now accepting applications for the Sharon Begley-STAT Science Reporting Fellowship, a new program with the goal of diversifying the ranks of science and health journalists and fostering better coverage of science that is relevant to all people. Read more.

  • The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) announced nearly $28 million in grants to support technology developments that will allow researchers to see the inner workings of cells at near-atomic resolution. CZI also launched a new funding opportunity to support plugin development projects for the napari image analysis platform. Read more.

  • The Story Exchange will award $5,000 incentive prizes to 5 female scientists addressing climate change. Eligible candidates will be scientists with advanced degrees in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, biology, environmental science or closely related fields. Read more.

A few highlights to focus on here include upcoming prizes and awards:

  • Do you know of someone who has promoted sound science in the face of hostility? Nominations are open for the 2021 John Maddox Prize for Standing up for Science. Read more. 
  • Nominations are now open for Research!America’s 2022 Advocacy Awards! The awards recognize individuals and organizations whose commitment to advocacy for research and innovation has advanced medical and public health progress in profoundly important ways. Read more.
  • The deadline to apply for a Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science is June 11. In 2022, the Vilcek Foundation will award 3 prizes of $50K to immigrant scientists whose research represents a significant contribution to their field. Read more.
  • Apply now for the Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology 2021! The prize is awarded annually to one young scientist who is not older than 35 years for the most outstanding neurobiological research based on molecular and cell biology. Read more.
  • STAT is now accepting applications for the Sharon Begley-STAT Science Reporting Fellowship, a new program with the goal of diversifying the ranks of science and health journalists and fostering better coverage of science that is relevant to all people. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative provided $225,000 to support the first two years of the program, which is named in honor of Sharon Begley, an award-winning science writer for STAT, who died in January 2021 at 64, from complications of lung cancer. RFS Briefings - May 25, 2021

I am pleased to include another issue of RFS Briefings with some timely and encouraging updates on women in science. 

A few highlights to focus on here include upcoming events and awards:

  • The past year has witnessed seismic shifts in many aspects of science, including the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to Professors Jennifer Doudna, PhD, and Emmanuelle Charpentier, PhD, for their discovery of CRISPR, transforming the landscape of gene therapy forever. As women gene therapy scientists see the truly limitless possibilities, we highlight a new issue of Human Gene Therapy on the occasion of the 2021 American Society for Gene and Cell Therapy Annual Meeting. The issue highlights several outstanding women scientists who lead gene therapy science today. Read more.

  • Congratulations to Raven Baxter, past RFS speaker, member of our Advisory Board, molecular biologist, science communicator, and recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence - Special Service (COVID-19). Read more.

  • Apply now for the 2022 Vilcek Prizes for Creative Promise in Biomedical Science. The Vilcek Foundation will award three Creative Promise Prizes of $50,000 each to young, immigrant biomedical scientists who have demonstrated exceptional achievements early in their careers.   • Register now for “Nutrition and the Brain (From Research to Practice), Thursday, June 10, 2021” with Mary Yannakoulia, PhD, Professor of Nutrition and Eating Behavior at Harokopio University. Read more.

RFS Briefings - May 18, 2021

I am pleased to include another issue of RFS Briefings with some timely and encouraging updates on women in science. 

A few highlights to focus on here include upcoming events and awards:

  • The Foundation for the Institutes of Health announced the launch of the Deeda Blair Research Initiative for Disorders of the Brain to drive innovation in mental health research. Mrs. Blair was an initial and ongoing supporter and Board Member of RFS. Read more.

  • Congratulations to Christine Petit and Christopher A. Walsh, recipients of the 2021 Gruber Neuroscience Prize, for their groundbreaking work on the genetic and molecular mechanisms behind the development of inherited neurodevelopmental disorders. Read more.

  • Nominations for the 2021 John Maddox Prize are open until June 14. The John Maddox Prize recognizes the work of an individual to promote sound science and evidence on a matter of public interest, facing difficulty or hostility in doing so. Read more.

  • The National Academy of Sciences announced the election of 120 members — 59 of whom are women, the most elected in a single year — and 30 international members in recognition of their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research. Read more.
